LEEDS UNITED defender Sam Byram remains on the radar of Sunderland, but a firm move is likely to hinge on whether the Wearsiders land fellow target Carl Jenkinson.

Several Premier League sides are keeping tabs on Byram, who has a year left on his Elland Road deal and has made no secret of his long-term ambition to prove himself in the top-flight.

Sunderland are one of them, but they are understood to be waiting on a decision by Arsenal full-back Jenkinson on his future before electing whether to step up their interest in Byram.

Jenkinson is currently on England Under-21 duty at the European Under-21 Championships in the Czech Republic, with Gareth Southgate’s side playing their opener against Portugal last night.

Sunderland have agreed a £1.5m loan fee with Arsenal for the 23-year-old, and are hoping to make him their first signing of the summer, but face strong rival interest from West Ham.

Jenkinson spent last season on loan at Upton Park and the Hammers are the favourites to re-sign him, despite not yet agreeing a fee with Arsenal.

The Gunners ace is likely to assess his options after the championships before reaching a decision on his future later this summer.

Aside from Sunderland, several other top-flight sides including Newcastle United and Aston Villa have been credited with interest in Byram, 22 in September.
