Leeds United manager Simon Grayson welcomed a “great draw” after his side were handed a West Yorkshire derby against Bradford City in the first round of the Carling Cup.

United will entertain the League Two Bantams at Elland Road during the week commencing August 8 in one of the picks of the first-round draw.

Leeds and City met on a competitive basis three years ago, fighting out a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie at Elland Road, and they will renew hostilities during the first week of the new season.

Grayson said: “It’s a great draw for both sides.

“There’s the local rivalry aspect and it’s a good game to have during the first week of the season.”

United reached the second round of the Carling Cup last season, losing to Leicester City at Elland Road, and they have been handed a home tie for the fifth time in succession after being seeded in yesterday’s draw. Other notable tiees include Notts County’s visit to Nottingham Forest and the possibility of AFC Wimbledon travelling to Selhurst Park – the former home of Wimbledon FC – to play Crystal Palace.

AFC Wimbledon and Crawley Town are to contest a preliminary tie before the first round begins due to Birmingham City’s involvement in the Europa League.

Holders Birmingham will enter the Carling Cup at the third-round stage.
