Federico Bessone has been named in the squad for Leeds United’s tour of Scotland after securing a chance to revive his career at Elland Road, writes Phil Hay.
The Argentinian was one of the more notable inclusions in the 24-man party named by manager Simon Grayson ahead of the club’s two-match spell north of the border.
Bessone, pictured above, endured a forgettable first year with Leeds last season, making only eight appearances and finishing the term on loan at Charlton Athletic, but the former Swansea City defender is set to feature in United’s first pre-season friendlies against Falkirk and Motherwell.
Grayson admitted last month that the absence of an established left-back at Elland Road could open the door for Bessone, saying: “We’re short in that department.
“If he starts well in pre-season and looks like the player we thought we had signed last year then he has an opportunity.”
While Bessone made the journey to Glasgow with Grayson’s squad yesterday, the United boss found no room for transfer-listed striker Mike Grella.
But four junior professionals – brothers Lewis and Nathan Turner, Zac Thompson and Alex Cairns – all made the cut along with the club’s only summer signing to date, goalkeeper Paul Rachubka.
Luciano Becchio and Ben Parker were passed fit to travel after recent injuries.
Grayson is hoping that his squad will be boosted by further signings in the coming days, admitting: “We’re taking 24 with us but it could well be that we add to that during the course of the week.”
Leeds begin their pre-season schedule at Falkirk on Wednesday (7.45pm) before meeting Motherwell at Fir Park next Saturday (3pm).
Young defenders Aidan White and Tom Lees, both of whom spent periods away from Elland Road on loan last season, are likely to play some part in both fixtures.
United squad: Rachubka, Cairns, Connolly, Thompson, O’Brien, Bruce, Bromby, Lees, Kisnorbo, Parker, White, L Turner, Bessone, N Turner, Howson, Clayton, Sam, Nunez, Snodgrass, Gradel, Paynter, Becchio, Somma, McCormack.
