A total of 2,593 players and club staff were tested between Monday, January 4 and Sunday - the Premier League has reinstated their twice-weekly tests - with 36 positives returned.

That represents a small drop in the number of positive tests. A record high of 40 were returned the previous week.

Players or staff testing positive must self isolate for 10 days and a number of games have fallen to Covid-19 outbreaks. Aston Villa and Spurs' game, due to be played on Wednesday, has been rescheduled by the Premier League Board following Villa's request. A number of players and staff have either tested positive or have been placed in isolation.

Spurs will now face Fulham on Wednesday instead, a game that was previously postponed due to Fulham's outbreak.

A Premier League statement said: "With the health of players and staff the priority, the League continues to work with Villa on measures to ensure their League season resumes safely and at the earliest opportunity.

"The Premier League wishes those with COVID-19 a full and swift recovery and will rearrange Villa's match against Spurs as soon as possible."

Southampton, due to play Leeds a week on Wednesday, had their FA Cup game against Shrewsbury Town postponed after positive tests at the EFL club and the Chelsea academy has been forced to close until next week due to an outbreak.

Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa requested that the media did not ask him about players missing through Covid-19 during his press conference last week.

The club's policy has been not to comment on positive tests, although record signing Rodrigo confirmed he had contracted the virus on his own social media accounts earlier this season.

Bielsa said: "You know very well I am not allowed to tell you if this is the case, so I would ask you to please avoid asking questions and read behind the lines. I would ask you not to ask me questions like that. It's not that I don't want to answer you, but when I give an evasive answer to adhere to what I've been asked to do, you may start to investigate something that shouldn't be found out, because it's a rule."
