Lee Bowyer says relegation-threatened Charlton Athletic must aim for all three points against Leeds United on Wednesday evening.

The Addicks could face an immediate return to League One with anything less that a victory at Elland Road.

Marcelo Bielsa's side have already been crowned champions of the Championship entering the final game of the season while Bowyer's side sit 21st in the division.

Charlton remain outside the drop zone on goal difference alone but wins for Luton Town and Barnsley at the weekend boosted their survival hopes with Hull City rooted bottom.

The visitors to LS11 do boast a better goal difference over their immediate rivals but anything less than a win could see them relegated if other results were to go against them.

Wigan Athletic's potential 12-point deduction could also save the South Londoners, but the Latics are on a strong run of form since the season's restart.

“We have got to go there and try and win," Bowyer said of the visit to his former club.

"We can’t rely on other teams. It’s in our hands – if we win we’re safe. If we don’t win and get a draw then you’re hoping other results go your way.

“Everyone down there has a tough game – no-one has an easy one; Barnsley are at Brentford, Luton have got Blackburn, who were exceptional at the weekend, Wigan are playing Fulham and we’re playing Leeds – it’s going to be difficult for all the teams.

“But I’ve said all along to my staff that since we have come back [from lockdown] it is Barnsley that we’ve got to be careful of – they are a good side.

"They were unlucky not to beat Leeds – they should have got something from that game.

“Barnsley are the ones who worry me really, if you are thinking which of the teams [in the bottom three] could do it [climb out].

“You’d think Brentford are at home and surely they would win but Barnsley have beaten Forest yesterday and were better than Leeds.”
