The USA under-23 international goalkeeper has agreed a two-year deal and Leeds are now likely to follow up the move by confirming a deal to sign Motherwell forward Lee Erwin.

The 21-year-old is likely to join Leeds on a three-year-contract for a six-figure development fee, with his deal at Fir Park expiring at the end of this month.

Owner Massimo Cellino met with Erwin’s representatives last month and has remained confident of securing a deal. Meanwhile, head coach Uwe Rosler is confident that Horton will be “a future number one” after completing his signing.

Horton, 20, has arrived from Cardiff City, where he worked with new Leeds goalkeeping coach Richard Hartis, whose appointment was finally confirmed yesterday. Born in London but raised in Ohio, the 6ft 4in keeper also had a season with Peterborough United in 2013-14 before joining Cardiff last summer and despite not making an appearance in the Football League, Rosler believes Horton can step up.

On Horton, brought across to England on the recommendation of ex-Spurs goalkeeper Brad Friedel, Rosler said: “We had Charlie on our radar through our goalkeeping coach Richard Hartis.

“I know the manager and assistant manager of the USA team and they gave him a glowing reference. We’re very happy with him.”

Horton added: “I’m really excited. Any time you can come to a club like Leeds, where all the players are hungry for success and hungry to move up the table and back to where the club belongs in the Premier League, that’s every player’s dream.”

Former West Ham United head of recruitment Martyn Glover is now in situ in an identical role at Leeds with Stuart Hayton, previously at Liverpool, is now confirmed as United’s new club secretary.
