Illan Meslier says Leeds United still have a big job to do in the Premier League, despite Marcelo Bielsa's side moving 14 points clear of the relegation zone.

The Whites returned to winning ways at Newcastle United on Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory over the Magpies at St James' Park.

United extended the points gap between themselves and the top flight drop zone with victory, sitting 12th in the table having picked up 26 points at the halfway mark of the campaign.

Leeds' senior players have been adamant and unified in their message throughout the season that retaining the club's Premier League status is top priority at Thorp Arch this term.

Despite the gap, though, goalkeeper Meslier insists that he and his teammates must continue to battle on regardless of the good foundations they have laid.

"It's been a good job, 26 points in the first year back in the Premier League," United's number one reflected post-match.

"We are in a good position but the job is not done, we need to win [more games]. We have 19 games left [in the season] and we need to take the maximum points to win and climb the table as far as we can."

Meslier returned in goal for the Whites in place of Kiko Casilla having missed the defeat to Brighton last time out following a period of self-isolation.

Asked about the win over the Magpies and his own performance, he said: "Newcastle started better than us in the second half and scored, so we had more pressure on us but we changed the tactics and we were right to score the second to win the game.

"It was difficult as I couldn't punch because there were too many people in the box. It's important for the team [to win] and that we keep the three points."
