Jamie Carragher believes it wouldn’t feel right if the current football season just came to an end with Leeds United chasing promotion.

The game across Europe has ground to a halt in recent weeks due to the ongoing outbreak of coronavirus around the world.

United sit top of the Championship table by a single point ahead of second-placed West Bromwich Albion and are a further seven points ahead of Fulham in third.

The Football Association announced on Thursday that the game in England will be suspended for a further period until April 30 with the 2019/20 season on hold indefinitely.

UEFA have also postponed this year’s European Championship’s until the summer of 2021 in a bid to help give room for the domestic calendar to be completed across Europe.

The governing bodies original statement outlined their aims to have the season finished by June 30, but have left room for further reorganisation if required amid the global health crisis.

A number of plans have been rumoured since the game was halted, with one of those seeing the Whites and Albion promoted by default to the top flight with no relegation taking place across the leagues.

Although unlikely, ex-Liverpool defender Carragher says he wouldn’t be a fan of any outcome that failed to see the matches completed on the pitch preferring instead a fair outcome.

“There was talk of the top two in the Championship going into the Premier League and then everyone’s happy and there is no relegation,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“Well, how would Fulham feel? I think they are only five or six points behind Leeds and West Brom.

“Leeds blew it last year when they were in the same position. There are so many questions around if you stop the league now and we all take our positions.

“I just think the Premier League, the FA, or whoever it may be, there will be owners getting involved. People will be getting sued left, right and centre,

“I just think it’s going to be an absolute mess throughout the leagues – if a league just stops it doesn’t feel right.

“If Leeds don’t get up this season that could stop them for the next four or five years and maybe they lose their manager. Who knows?”

Asked whether it was a realistic ambition from UEFA to finish the season by the end of June, he added: “I don’t think the dates that we have been given are right. That’s UEFA just hoping and praying.

“There is no way the Champions League final is going to be in June. I don’t see us playing football then [April 30]. I’m not sure when these games can be cramped in.

“This season has to be finished, though. Fans and players have put too much into it. Next season they have to be creative. I think UEFA knows that.

“How important is the Nations League? Is it possible to push the Champions League back further? Something has got to give with next season.

“No matter what happens with next season then it will still be equal.

“Liverpool is the easy thing [to decide]. I’m more worried about the relegation and promotion and Champions League places.”
