Leeds United transfer news: Interest touted in Kalvin Phillips, Bielsa target is 'real deal'

Leeds United fans adore Kalvon Phillips – and for good reason.

The midfielder is one of their own, a local lad done good who has established himself as a key asset for both club and country, and whose presence in the centre of the park is usually a prerequisite for the Whites to pick up a victory.

Phillips has missed eight games in the Premier League this season, and Leeds have lost six of them.

With that in mind, the last thing that supporters will want to think about is him one day leaving the club, but it’s a topic that has been approached by former Elland Road midfielder Carlton Palmer. Speaking to Football Fancast, he argued that it’s only a matter of time before a slew of Premier League big guns start taking an interest in the 25-year-old.

He said: “Listen, if you’re playing well and you’re playing for your country, they’ll always be interest. That is for sure.

“Once you start playing for your country, you’re playing well and you’re playing for your club in the Premier League, of course, people are going to come and watch you and people are going to be interested in you. That’s a fact.

“Obviously, nowadays, with the riches that can be added to the Premier League, it’s easy for these players to get their head turned.”

Phillips was previously a target for Aston Villa in the summer of 2019, and even told The Times that he was “swaying towards” a move to the midlands for a time.

Elsewhere, Alex McLeish has heaped praise on reported Leeds target Noni Madueke.

According to the Evening Standard, the Whites have made tentative contact over a potential swoop for the PSV Eindhoven forward, who was born in London and spent time with Tottenham as a youth player.

The 19-year-old has seven goals and six assists in 20 league matches this season, and McLeish is convinced that Marcelo Bielsa is the man to get the best out of him going forward.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “You would have to think that, knowing the Bielsa standards, this guy’s the real deal.

“I have a wee look at the leagues every week and PSV are still at the top. If I was back in the game, there’s no doubt guys like that would have caught my eye.

“I think the other guys have done their bit. Just when you think Leeds are struggling because Patrick doesn’t score. Then you see some of the other guys pitching in with some inspirational goals.

“They still need to keep improving. I think he’d be a very potent threat. If he can combine with guys like Patrick and the other prolific contributors, then it’d be a good signing.

“They’re keeping their eye on the ball and the up and coming potential best players.”

Madueke is also an England U21 international, and made his debut in the recent European Championship defeat to Portugal.
