'If Carlsberg did Mondays...' - Leeds fans react as Frank Lampard is sacked from Chelsea post

After a fairly underwhelming run of results, Chelsea finally took the decision to dismiss Frank Lampard from his post at the club on Monday – and Leeds United fans have been keen to react on social media.

The former England international has endured a tumultuous and often heated relationship with the Whites and their fanbase in recent seasons, a rivalry that stemmed largely from the infamous “Spygate” affair back in 2019.

Lampard was in charge of Derby County at the time that Marcelo Bielsa had been found to have sent a member of his staff to secretly watch a Rams training session.

The 42-year-old took umbrage to the Argentine’s approach, and tensions were heightened even further when the two sides met in the Championship play-off semi-finals later that year.

Lampard’s side edged the Whites over two legs, and the coach and his players took great delight in celebrating the victory by singing “Stop Crying Frank Lampard” in their dressing room at Elland Road following the win.

The chant, based on Oasis’ “Stop Crying Your Heart Out”, became a favourite of the Leeds support in the aftermath of the Spygate saga.

Since then, Lampard was appointed to the top job in South West London, but despite a summer of vast spending, has struggled to get the best out of his squad this term.

He leaves his position with Chelsea ninth in the table, and with just one win in their last five Premier League matches.

Needless to say, many Leeds supporters were delighted to see their old adversary dismissed:

@DavidKershaw7 tweeted: “Stop crying Frank Lampard”.

@Bromley_LUFC tweeted: “Increased investment in Leeds and Frank Lampard sacked all in the same day… Lovely stuff”.

@James_Rodgers1 tweeted: “If Carlsberg did Monday mornings. Leeds announce new investment, Chelsea sack Lampard.”

@Farley2359 tweeted: “I think Lampard’s next move should be assistant manager at Leeds United! He’d learn a thing or two from the manager!”

@Pete_Allison tweeted: “Very petty of Leeds fans to enjoy the Frank Lampard news and yet HERE I AM!”

@AdamOzzy tweeted: “It’s almost like hiring a man with no significant experience in management was a bad decision. Stop crying Frank Lampard.”
