'I changed studs' - Patrick Bamford concedes struggles with Elland Road pitch but pleased with Leeds United milestone

Patrick Bamford has admitted to struggling with the new Elland Road playing surface - revealing he altered studs at half-time against Crystal Palace.

The Whites hosted the Eagles in LS11 on Monday night in the Premier League and cruised to an impressive 2-0 victory over their South London counterparts.

Jack Harrison opened the scoring for Marcelo Bielsa's men in just the third minute before Bamford bagged his 100th career goal in the second half.

The victory for Leeds saw them leapfrog Arsenal into the top half to sit 10th in the standings ahead of this weekend's visit to face the Gunners.

United's clash with Palace also saw a second outing for the brand new pitch at Elland Road.

Leeds opted to replace the playing surface ahead of last week's hosting of Everton following persistent issues with the old drainage system at the club's home ground.

The Whites have installed a hybrid pitch - at the cost of £300,000 - as a short term fix this season until complete renovation work can be undertaken in the summer.

Both sets of players could be seen slipping throughout the encounter on Monday night with a recent bout of bad weather causing more problems.

Bamford - who was speaking to Sky Sports after the victory - admitted that the new pitch was better that its predecessor but still required some adjustment.

“I think it’s important to try and make your home ground like a fortress, it’s kind of difficult with our pitch at the minute," Bamford conceded.

"We almost suit playing away better, but we had to concentrate to the maximum tonight. We were relentless, we didn’t give up and we saw it through to the end so it was well deserved.

“It’s better (the pitch), it’s hard to stand up, that’s all I’ll say. I’m still wearing studs, but I had to basically put rugby studs in at half time."

Asked about his landmark career goal against the Eagles, he added: "The most important thing is getting the three points.

"It’s nice to hit 100 [career goals], it’s probably long overdue, but it’s nice to get there."
