Harry Redknapp fully behind Leeds United's quest to complete the job of promotion to the Premier League

The Premier League and EFL seasons have been indefinitely extended due to the global battle against coronavirus which first brought English football to a standstill over the second weekend in March.

Action in both the Premier League and EFL has been suspended until at least April 30 but officials have already accepted that resuming action at the end of the month is not a realistic prospect with the country currently on lockdown with strict social distancing rules due to COVID-19.

There have been calls in some quarters for the current season to be declared null and void with such measures having already been taken in the non-league sphere below National League level.

Other suggestions including finishing the seasons with standings as they are or simply waiting until the country has turned the tide with coronavirus and finishing the remaining games in the summer or even autumn or winter.

And hugely experienced former manager Redknapp is in the camp favouring the latter in hoping that concluding the current campaign's remaining fixtures will be put first before even thinking about next season, however long that wait may be.

Both the EFL and Premier League have said their primary objective is to deliver a successful conclusion to the rest of the season by finishing the remainder of the campaign on the pitch.

The football hiatus comes with Leeds closing in on a long-awaited return to the Premier League with the Whites top of the Championship and seven points clear in the automatic promotion spots with nine games left.

In the top flight, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool are two wins away from sealing a first English title in 30 years.

Asked how he would like to see the season brought to an end and if he would like to see leagues fully completed before even thinking about next season, Redknapp told Sky Sports News: "Yes I would, that's what I would love to see. I'd love to see the season fully completed before we ever start next season whenever that may be.

"I really want to see Liverpool win the league, I want to see the teams in the top four and I want to see the teams in the Championship and in every other league who might get promoted.

"I think it should be finished and brought to a conclusion before we even start next season, that's what I would like to see."

UEFA were meeting with their 55 members on Wednesday to discuss ways in which the current campaign could be completed and the potential rescheduling of games.

European football's governing body initially set a date of June 30 for their leagues to be completed but deputy chief medical officer for England Dr Jenny Harries admitted on Monday that it could be six months or longer before the country could get back to normal.
