A 'gross injustice' for Roy Hodgson as Crystal Palace captain Luka Milivojevic misses Leeds United clash at Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace will be missing their captain Luka Milivojevic when Leeds United visit Selhurst Park on Saturday after he failed to appeal a red card.

The Serbian hoped to overturn his suspension, following a sending off for a challenge on Wolves' João Moutinho last Friday and misses all of Palace's three November fixtures.

Milivojevic caught the Portugese on the ankle, leading referee Martin Atkinson to check the challenge on the monitor before producing a red card.

Palace boss Roy Hodgson didn't think his skipper had even fouled the Wolves man.

"My view is it's not a sending off and I've told Martin Atkinson that," he said.

"He thinks there was a reason to give a red card but I've seen it as well and I certainly don't agree with that. It was a fair challenge and there was no intent to contact Joao Moutinho at all.

"To get three games for that would be a gross injustice and it will round off a very disappointing evening for us because we lost the game."

Milivojevic started the game against Wolves in the middle of a three-man midfield, the first time Hodgson has moved away from his usual 4-4-2 formation in the Premier League this season.

In the first four games he selected James McArthur and James McCarthy in the centre, but the latter has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury. Jairo Riedewald is also among his midfield options.

Palace, like Leeds, have earned 10 points from their opening seven league fixtures with a results record identital to that of the Whites. Hodgson's men have scored five fewer goals and conceded two fewer than Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds.

Saturday's game will be the last before the November international break and Leeds are hoping to have Brazilian winger Raphinha back after an ankle knock kept him out of Monday's defeat by Leicester City. The game is expected to come too soon for centre-half Diego Llorente, who is recovering from a groin issue, while Rodrigo will miss out having tested positive for COVID-19 and Kalvin Phillips remains a doubt with a shoulder injury.
