Leeds United's Under-23s were edged out 2-1 by Derby County on Friday evening in Premier League Cup action at Bootham Crescent as Jean-Kevin Augustin saw more development minutes.

Carlos Corberan named a strong line-up in York as Augustin, Kalvin Phillips and Barry Douglas all started the Group H clash.

Goalkeeper Elia Caprile was also handed a debut in net following his move to West Yorkshire last month while Ian Poveda was named among the substitutes.

It was the Rams who started the better of the two teams and they should've put themselves in front inside the five minute mark.

Rushian Hepburn-Murphy delivered a perfect dipping ball into the box for Josh Shonibare but he could only guide his header over the bar.

Derby, though, had their opening goal a short while later as Phillips brought down the winger inside the area with referee Thomas Bramall pointing to the spot.

Jahmal Hector-Ingram converted from 12-yards as he sent Caprile the wrong way to give the visitors the lead.

A bad start was to get worse for Leeds as Derby doubled the advantage just after the half hour mark.

Shonibare this time returned the favour for Hepburn-Murphy who made no mistake with his diving effort inside the six-yard box.

Augustin cut a frustrated figure as he shot from his own half with service lacking but the Whites did drag themselves back into the game on the stroke of half-time through Theo Hudson.

United's best move of the night ended with full-back Joe Stanley picking out the midfielder's run at the back post to cut the deficit in half.

Augustin and Douglas made way at the interval with Oliver Casey and Jordan Stevens coming on.

Poveda entered the evening five minutes later after Bryce Hosannah was unable to continue following a heavy tackle by the corner flag.

Leeds were much the better side as Kamwa twice went close before Pascal Struijk saw a header fly agonisingly over the woodwork.

The Whites pushed on in search of a leveller and Niall Huggins had the best chance to even the match up in the closing stages but lost his footing at the crucial moment.

Derby held on and with it knocked last year's semi-finalists out with Leeds now unable to qualify with one game of the group stages remaining.
