In a sign of the times, the legendary Whites skipper now has a face mask to protect him from coronavirus.

It's the work of huge Leeds United fan Ashley Newsome and his two young boys, who carried out the prank before the UK went into lockdown.

Ashley said: "We go to a lot of the Leeds home matches. Me my fiancée and my two boys are big fans."

The 33-year-old said his boys, Jak, ten, and AJ, five, were "a little bit upset about football stopping and everything going on lately."

He added: "I did it too lighten the mood, something for my two boys to remember, not thinking of all the negativity related to coronavirus, but remembering when we put the mask on Billy so he was safe too.

"It was something they found funny and changed their mood.

"We posted it to the Leeds United fan page as we thought we could spread the laugh and hopefully cheer everyone up.

"I got my fiancée to bring me and my two boys down to Elland Road on March 20, a couple of days before lockdown.

"We knew it was only a matter of time before we were going to be stopped going out unless absolutely necessary."

With no football for the foreseeable future, Ashley also gave his view on what should happen with the current season.

He said: "I’d like to get to finish the league and see us go up properly as champions, but either way we should go up anyway we are top of the league and by far the best team in the Championship this year!"
