Carlton Palmer outlines two solutions that would prevent 'unfair' treatment to Leeds United, even with Christmas deadline

The EFL season has been paused due to the ongoing battle against coronavirus with United nine games away from a potential return to the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

Marcelo Bielsa's Whites sit top of the Championship and hold a seven-point cushion in the automatic promotion spots but the FA have currently extended the season indefinitely with all football suspended until at least April 30 but with with officials knowing there is no realistic prospect of playing this month.

With the country currently on lockdown and with strict social distancing measures in place, there have been suggestions in some quarters that the season should be declared null and void.

Palmer, though, says the season should be given until at least December to resume if needs be and that if the present campaign is to be cancelled then United should be promoted based on current standings in the league.

The break in play and uncertainty about both the EFL and Premier League's 2019-20 conclusion also comes with Liverpool just two wins away from sealing their first top flight title for 30 years,

“It’s unfair on Liverpool, it’s unfair on Leeds United," said Palmer, speaking on White & Sawyer on talkSPORT.

"If it was before Christmas I’d agree with voiding it.

"But now, the current season needs to be finished.

“Leeds are a massive club and I want to see them promoted to the Premier League.

"But my stance is because the majority of games have been played, there are eight or nine games to go.

"If you’re not going to complete it I think it should stand as it is.

“There are only nine games left in the Championship, the majority of games have been played,

“As soon as football is able to be played, which will be a way away, I think they need to finish the season in the format set out, and then move to next season. "Maybe just play each team once and flip for home or away."
