LEEDS UNITED will face League Two outfit Newport County at Elland Road in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
The Whites were drawn away from home but Newport were given permission by the EFL to play any second-round tie away from home due to the resurfacing of their Rodney Parade pitch. The game will consequently be played at Elland Road midweek in the week commencing August 21.
Newport were placed in the northern section of the draw to avoid playing West Ham United, who were also given permission by the EFL to play their second-round tie away from home due to the athletics World Championships taking place at their ground.
Leeds booked their place in the second round with Wednesday night’s 4-1 victory over League Two visitors Port Vale at Elland Road in which Spanish debutant Samuel Saiz bagged a hat-trick.
Fellow debutant Caleb Ekuban was also on target for the Whites who made it two wins out of two under new head coach Thomas Christiansen following Sunday’s 3-2 success at opening weekend Championship hosts Bolton Wanderers.
Leeds are back in action on Saturday at home to Preston North End who also won on the opening weekend courtesy of a 1-0 success at home to Sheffield Wednesday.
Preston, though, were then dumped out of of the Carabao Cup three days later through a 3-2 defeat at League Two hosts Accrington.
United reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup last season which earned the Whites a trip to Liverpool, a game the Reds won 2-0.
