The Seagulls took a 14th-minute lead through a Pascal Gross penalty awarded for Gjanni Alioski's clumsy challenge on Danny Welbeck.

Brighton then squandered several good opportunities to double their lead and finally made it 2-0 with a fine turn and finish from Welbeck with 11 minutes left.

The victory lifted Graham Potter's side from fourth-bottom to 14th in the Premier League table and ten points clear of the dropzone whereas Leeds stay ninth with four games left.

The hosts began brightly and two powerful efforts from Leandro Trossard were safely held by Illan Meslier.

But the Seagulls were then awarded a 13th-minute penalty as Alioski needlessly hauled down Welbeck just inside the box.

Gross stepped up to take the spot kick and fired his effort into the bottom left corner to beat Meslier who had dived the right way.

Leeds almost equalised in the 22nd minute when a Jack Harrison cross caused a game of pinball Brighton headers in the box but the Seagulls survived, and again as Harrison let fly from inside the box shortly after.

Harrison also attempted a dipping volley just before the half hour mark but the effort dipped over the bar.

A thunderous Tyler Roberts strike was then blocked by Dan Burn but Brighton then squandered a glorious chance when Trossard could only fire wide from point blank range after an error from Diego Llorente when looking to play out from the back.

The Seagulls also squandered a good chance just seconds after the restart as Joel Veltman blazed over from the edge of the box.

Former Whites loanee Ben White sent a header over the bar on the hour mark before a Veltman volley was blocked.

Another glorious chance was then presented to Maupay who could only side-foot wide.

Leeds looked to rally and a shot from substitute Rodrigo was blocked before Stuart Dallas thumped a rasping volley over from the edge of the box.

But Brighton bagged their second goal of the game with 11 minutes left when Welbeck produced a beautiful turn and finish from a bouncing ball in the box.
