However, Whites head coach Marcelo Bielsa told Sky Sports that centre back Pascal Struijk would replace Phillips in the holding midfield role as Shackleton slots in at right back and Luke Ayling moves to centre back next to skipper Liam Cooper.

Phillips hobbled off in the 88th minute of Monday night's 2-0 victory at home to Crystal Palace having picked up a knock to his calf.

Shackleton replaced the England international midfielder and is now given the nod to start in Phillips' absence.

Pablo Hernandez also returns from injury to take a place on the bench but Rodrigo, Ian Poveda, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Gaetano Berardi and Adam Forshaw remain sidelined though Berardi is now back in training upon his recovery from a torn ACL.

Key duo Thomas Partey (hamstring) and Kieran Tierney (calf) are both out for the Gunners.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has made five changes to the side that started last weekend's 1-0 loss at Aston Villa.
