Leeds United: Whites still waiting for a decision on Ekuban's foot injury

Leeds United are continuing to assess Caleb Ekuban with the club crossing their fingers that the striker has avoided another serious injury.

Ekuban is expected to undergo further scans in the next 24 hours as Leeds seek to establish the full extent of the foot injury suffered by him at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

United feared that Ekuban had sustained a recurrence of the broken bone which forced him to miss three months of this season and sent him for a series of tests on Monday and Tuesday.

Ekuban left Loftus Road on crutches and wearing a protective boot but Leeds hope their worst concerns about the extent of the injury will be allayed by the results of his examinations.

The Ghanaian forward returned last month from a three-month lay-off caused by an injury picked up on his Championship debut at Sunderland in August.

United were forced to send him for surgery to pin a broken bone little over a month after signing him from Italian club Chievo.

Ekuban’s comeback saw him reclaim a place in Thomas Christiansen’s starting line-up, helped by an injury to Pierre-Michel Lasogga, but United’s head coach was forced to replace him 38 minutes into Saturday’s 3-1 victory in London.

Christiansen’s choice of centre-forwards has been hit by Lasogga missing the past five games with a calf strain but the German is pushing to return against Norwich City at Elland Road this weekend.

Kemar Roofe, meanwhile, stepped into the breach at QPR by scoring a second-half hat-trick after switching from the left wing to replace Ekuban up front.

Christiansen admitted at full-time that he was concerned about Ekuban’s condition, saying: “I’m not a doctor, I cannot say for sure, but it looks like it could be the same (injury).

“He’s had very good performances and he’s helped the team to take good points. It’s a shame he got injured.”
