Leeds United: The Whites' last five trips to Sheffield Wednesday

The clubs are in very different positions going into the weekend’s tie, with Wednesday pushing for the play-off places and Leeds marooned in mid-table.

Can history give us an indication of how the match might go? Here is a look back at the five most recent encounters between the two sides at Hillsborough:

Sheffield Wednesday 1 Leeds United 2; April 25, 2015; Championship

Leeds ended a run of five straight defeats thanks to goals from Charlie Taylor and Steve Morison. It represented a turnaround for Morison, his second goal in two games after a long run without scoring. Wednesday took a 36th minute lead through Chris Maguire’s penalty, but offered little in the second-half and unsurprisingly lost all three points to the Whites.

Sheffield Wednesday 6 Leeds United 0; January 11, 2014; Championship

One of the more staggering matches between these two sides in history. Leeds were buoyed by the arrival of Jimmy Kebe and Cameron Stewart in the days prior, but an experimental 3-4-3 formation failed to pan out for Brian McDermott’s side. They were two behind before half-time. McDermott then introduced Matt Smith from the bench, but he was sent off after only 60 seconds on the field. Wednesday went on to score four more to utterly destroy Leeds.

Sheffield Wednesday 1 Leeds United 1; October 19, 2012; Championship

Jay Bothroyd put Sheffield Wednesday into a 44th minute lead, but the points were shared after Michael Tonge’s stunning volleyed equaliser. However, the game was marred and ultimately defined by the celebrations that followed Tonge’s goal. A Leeds fan ran onto the pitch and struck Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, with the former England international requiring several minutes of medical attention.

Sheffield Wednesday 0 Leeds United 1; August 27, 2006; Championship

A David Healy penalty was all that separated the two sides back in August 2006. Healy took the spot kick after being felled by Owls goalkeeper Brad Jones, who was sent off for denying the Northern Ireland international a clear goalscoring opportunity. Wednesday had plenty of opportunities to earn a draw, not least Deon Burton, who should have scored twice.

Sheffield Wednesday 1 Leeds United 0; September 13, 2005; Championship

Sheffield Wednesday’s first league win of the season under then-manager Paul Sturrock. It only took nine minutes for Chris Eagles to put the Owls into the lead in bizarre fashion. Eagles’ cross evaded everyone in the area before nestling into the back of the net. Leeds could not break down Wednesday, despite Kevin Blackwell throwing on strikers Robbie Blake and Rob Hulse.
