Leeds United v Bristol City: Roofe back after head blow but Shaughnessy and Roberts out longer term

Leeds will still be without suspended trio Samu Saiz, Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi who will all be back available for Wednesday night’s trip to Derby County.

Striker Tyler Roberts plus defenders Luke Ayling and Conor Shaughnessy are all out injured for the long term but Roofe returned to training on Friday after losing a tooth following a knock to the head in last weekend’s 2-1 loss at Bramall Lane.

Heckingbottom also revealed that midfielder Ouasim Bouy had cracked his ribs in training but that the 24-year-old had quickly returned to training.

Asked about his latest team news ahead of Sunday’s clash with the Robins, Heckingbottom said: “Ouasim Bouy cracked a couple of ribs in training last week but he has been back in today and Roofey obviously went off against with a head bang against Sheffield United but he has been back in today following the protocol so we have got decent numbers.”

Providing an update on Shaughnessy’s ankle injury, Heckingbottom admitted: “He will be long term.

“Whether he ends up having surgery or not is something that we will have to check and see but either way he’s going to be out for a while.

“It’s similar to Luke Ayling’s. I’d embarrass myself if I tried to go through all the diagnosis but that’s all I know.”

Asked if he knew how long deadline day striker signing Roberts would be out for, Heckingbottom said: “We’re not sure yet.

“He has got to go back for another scan.

“We were just getting him back to being involved with the team and joining back in training with the players and he felt something in his shin, just about his ankle and he reported it after training.

“He wasn’t in a place where he was ready to come in, we still wanted to do some work with him anyway and push him.

“But the problem is that on the first assessment of the scans he has got a little crack in there in the bone so we need to go and get that reassessed.

“It’s unfortunate, the fact that now he is going to be out for a considerable length of time whereas we had got him back training and we were hoping we could build him up and get him match ready within training and use him between now and the end of the season.

“But we will obviously be guided now by the specialist and what they say.”
