McCormack left Leeds for Fulham in 2014 but joined Villa in the summer and looked on course to make a third appearance at Elland Road for the opposing side after two outings with Fulham.

But the 30-year-old striker is still recovering from an ankle injury, with Villa also likely to be without centre-back Nathan Baker who is struggling with a groin problem.

Villa boss Bruce has been impressed with both Leeds and their head coach Garry Monk this season, saying: “I saw them against Liverpool and they are a very, very good side. We look at Leeds – with the history and the tradition and the support they have got – they have got a wonderful support.

“Leeds versus Aston Villa, for me, should be in the big league – but we’re not. But there will be no disputing that it should be a great game.

“Both teams are in form, both teams are bang at it and it should be a very, very good game of football.”

Hailing the attributes of Monk, Bruce added: “He is a very bright, articulate, young manager and one to look out for in the future. He’s certainly got Leeds at it.”
