The Irish player has agreed a one-year deal at Elland Road, 24 hours before his old contract was due to expire.

Stokes, 20, was one of a number of academy products offered new terms by Leeds when the club’s retained list was issued in early May.

Left-back Tyler Denton and goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell have already put pen to paper and midfielder Alex Purver and striker Frank Mulhern are expected to finalise extended contracts in the days ahead.

A number of Under-21s have been working with United’s first team squad following the start of pre-season training at Thorp Arch this week and Stokes said: “It’s been good to come straight back into training with the first team.

“Hopefully I’ll stay there for the whole season and make an impression.”

Stokes was joint top-scorer for Leeds’ development squad last term with eight goals.

“I enjoyed last season, it was probably the best season I’ve had at the club and I’ve been rewarded now with a new deal,” he said.
