Leeds United: Rowett's sacking by Blues branded '˜unbelievable' by Whites' boss

GARY Rowett's sacking as Birmingham City boss has been labelled an 'unbelievable decision' by Leeds United head coach Garry Monk who felt the 42-year-old had performed a 'fantastic job' with the Blues.

Birmingham sit just one point and two places behind sixth-placed Leeds in eighth but Rowett was relieved of his duties on Wednesday and swiftly replaced by Gianfranco Zola the same day.

Birmingham’s new owner Trillion Trophy Asia Limited (TTAL) said the decision had been taken “with a strategic, long-term view and with the club’s best interests at heart” – but Monk failed to see the logic in giving the former defender the boot.

The Blues approached Tuesday night’s home clash with Ipswich Town following a 4-0 loss at Newcastle United and a 3-0 defeat at home to Barnsley, but Tuesday’s 2-1 success against the Tractor Boys means Birmingham are still only three points off third.

“I was amazed if I’m honest,” said Monk, when asked for his reaction to Rowett’s sacking. “I think it’s an unbelievable decision from the outside. Gary is an excellent manager. I think he has done a fantastic job at Birmingham, taking them from when he took over to where they are.

“I know they missed out very closely on the play-offs last year but they seem to be building a good squad there and they were competing in and around the play-offs again this season.

“To me, it’s an unbelievable decision.”

He added: “But, I think in football nowadays, nothing really shocks you any more.

“I wish Gary all the best and I’m sure he won’t find it hard to find another job.”
