Leeds United: No '˜I' in team insists seasoned stopper Green

Green refused to take the plaudits for a performance which included a brilliant second-half save from Bristol City striker Milan Djuric and said he was focused on helping United manage the pressure in the race for a top-six finish.

The veteran goalkeeper, who has been the subject of criticism at stages of his first season at ELland Road, withstood a spate of Bristol City chances before Djuric finally claimed a consolation goal in the sixth minute of injury-time.

Green admitted he was “pleased to play my part in a win” but said: “I’ve had games this season where I’ve stood around, not done anything and then conceded. That’s the nature of being in goal. The older you get, the more experienced you get and the more you break games down into individual moments.

“You compartmentalise it all into something you can analyse and form doesn’t really exist because with everything going on, you’re probably doing 50-60 things in a game.

“It might not look like much to people on the outside looking in but you’ve got a mindset where you want to get everything right. It’s not like playing out-field with the flow of the game, getting caught up in it.

“Form’s a strange one with goalkeeping. You can have an amazing game and concede a goal which you make a mistake for, lose 1-0 and it’s the end of the world.

“I’ve been there many a time and because you’re the goalkeeper it gets highlighted.

“But having said that, it’s pleasing to play my part in a win.”

Leeds’ victory ended a run of two straight defeats and tightened their hold on a play-off place with 14 matches left to contest.

Head coach Garry Monk admitted his side were under pressure ahead of Tuesday’s game, but Green said: “One of my roles as one of the senior members of the team is to explain to the lads that this is fun pressure. It’s nice pressure to be under. If you’re not going to enjoy these run-ins then there’s no point taking part.”
