Ribeiro represented Leeds and Sheffield United during his playing career, as well as the likes of hometown club Vitoria Setubal and Beira-Mar in his native Portugal.

Since hanging up his boots, Ribeiro has had two stints in charge of Vitoria as well as coaching several other Portuguese clubs and Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad, who he managed in the Champions League qualifying rounds.

Ribeiro told www.port-vale.co.uk: “I’m very happy, my ambition was to come to England and now to come to Port Vale.

“It’s a big club with good conditions. I believe this is a Championship club and I am very happy here and I will do my best.”

Chairman Norman Smurthwaite added: “I’m very pleased to be able to appoint Bruno as the club’s new manager.

“It has been a long, extensive process but I’m absolutely certain we have the right man for the job.”

Former midfielder Peter Farrell has been announced as Port Vale’s new first-team coach.
