Leeds United: Five issues for Garry Monk to address

1. What remit and budget has he been given by the chairman?

Confusion surrounded the rein of former head coach Steve Evans who says he was only ever charged with the task of keeping Leeds in the division, having arrived with the club just one point above the Championship drop-zone.

Evans said he would be offered a new deal if achieving that aim but wasn’t – despite the club finishing 13th.

Monk is bound to be set a more ambitous target with Cellino vowing to refund at least 25 per cent of the cost of all season tickets bought before the May 31 deadline should United fail to reach the play-offs. That refund will rise to 50 per cent should the club sell 15,000 season tickets by the end of July.

By the close of play on Tuesday, Leeds had sold just over 13,000, already surpassing last year’s total of 12,500. If Leeds miss out on the top six next term it is going to cost Cellino dear, so is the Italian going to put his money where his mouth is?

2. Why only a one-year deal?

Various sources were reporting on Thursday morning that Monk had signed a 12-month deal with the option of another year. United then confirmed that the former Swansea City manager had penned a one-year rolling contract at Elland Road on Thursday morning.

A 12-month contract would naturally seem short and fans will be hoping Monk is here for the long haul. Therein, does Monk see this as a short-term or genuine long-term appointment?

3. What is the situation with his backroom staff?

One national newspaper insisted on Thursday morning that a potential stumbling block to the hiring of Monk was the situation with his backroom staff.

Monk is thought to be keen to bring in his former Swansea assistant Pep Clotet as his No 2 but Cellino had apparently hoped to pair Monk with the club’s former winger Tommy Wright, who is currently assistant head coach at Barnsley.

The backroom team is crucial to the success of any head coach - as illutsrated in the case of Neil Redfearn and Steve Thompson.

4. How much control does he have over first team selection?

Former Whites head coach Steve Evans was adamant that he had the final say when it came to picking the team but chairman Massimo Cellino is known for his hands-on approach. It will be interesting to see what Monk says when it comes to team selection matters.

5. What is happening with Lewis Cook and Charlie Taylor?

Monk has barely been in the door five minutes but there is no denying the importance of the situation surrounding both Cook and Taylor, who are out of contract next summer.

Contract offers ultimately lie above the head coach but the former Swansea City manager will no doubt have something to say about two of United’s prized assets.
