Leeds United to face Klopp's Liverpool in EFL Cup

Leeds will visit Liverpool for the first time in a competitive game since 2003 with the Elland Road club bidding to end a 20-year wait for an appearance in the League Cup’s semi-finals.

The clash with Klopp’s side – currently joint top of the Premier League – is United’s reward for their dramatic win over Norwich City in the fourth round on Tuesday.

The tie will take place in the week beginning November 28, in between Championship games against Rotherham United and Aston Villa. Liverpool reached the last eight with a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

United head coach Garry Monk had hoped for a home tie following his side’s penalty shoot-out victory against Norwich but despite the attention on last night’s draw and the euphoria of Tuesday evening, he stressed the need for his squad to turn their attention quickly to Saturday’s league clash with Burton Albion.

Leeds have gone six games without defeat at Elland Road, climbing to 10th in the Championship, and Monk said: “What’s very important now is that we focus on Saturday and we get ready in the next few days to put on a performance.

“We’re six games unbeaten at Elland Road. I talked about making it a fortress but it’s no good (beating Norwich) if we can’t back it up on Saturday. That’s me with my manager’s head on but it’s how I have to think. And it’s the truth.”

Last night, Juan Mata’s strike gave Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho a timely boost as their 1-0 fourth-round win over Manchester City stretched their alarming winless streak to six matches.
