Leeds United: Clapham 'amused' by Barnsley abuse

Leeds United assistant manager Jamie Clapham has revealed he failed to notice any of the abuse directed at Paul Heckingbottom during Saturday's 2-1 win over Barnsley until the end of the fixture.

The United manager left his boyhood club in February to take up the hot seat in West Yorkshire and was subject to abuse from the visiting supporters for the way in which he departed the Tykes throughout the 90 minutes.

Following the game Heckingbottom was stood by the Elland Road tunnel as the players left the field with the Barnsley fans turning their attention to their former manager. One Reds fan attempted to make his way down the stand to confront the Whites boss before stewards intervened - Leeds are yet to comment on the incident.

Clapham though, who carried out the 40-year-old's media duties following the game, revealed that he wasn't aware of the abuse until the very end of the match when the incident occurred.

"I didn't really hear it until the end but it was quite amusing, yeah," said Clapham.

"It's something that you expect. It's a derby, it's one of those things, it was a well-tempered derby and there weren't really any bad challenges but two teams who wanted to win.

"They're fighting for their lives and at this moment in time, it's a difficult stage in the season for us because we want to win every game. If you're at the bottom it's as if you've got an extra edge to your game because there's really something on it so full credit our players."
