Leeds United ace Kemar Roofe sent for scan on ribs

Roofe was ruled out of United’s Championship visit to the John Smith’s Stadium with a problem suffered in last week’s 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers.

He trained in the build-up to Sunday’s meeting with Huddersfield but was withdrawn from Garry Monk’s intended squad after complaining of fresh pain in a session at Thorp Arch.

Monk had replaced Roofe on the hour at Ewood Park but United’s head coach is awaiting the results of examinations of his injury in the hope that Roofe will not be absent for an extended period of time.

Monk said: “On Wednesday he had a bit of a rib injury and he was feeling it in training (on Saturday). It was more precautionary than anything but he’ll be having a scan. We don’t think it’s anything serious.”

Roofe has been a regular member of Monk’s starting line-up since overcoming a slow start to his career at Leeds and the 23-year-old was in line to make his 20th league start at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Monk’s injury worries – prevalent throughout the campaign – had eased in the past few weeks, leaving left-back Charlie Taylor as the only absentee ahead of the club’s game at Blackburn, and United increased their pool of attacking players on the last day of the transfer window by signing wingers Alfonso Pedraza and Mo Barrow.

Both signings made their debuts as substitutes in a 2-1 loss to Huddersfield, with Pedraza coming close to a goal with one of his first touches, but Monk admitted that Leeds had not been able to make the most of either introduction.

“Part of the plan away from home was to play a little bit more in the second half on the counter-attack,” he said.

“My only slight criticism is that we didn’t use the first one or two passes well enough to allow that. They committed a lot of players forward and it was on to counter-attack but we didn’t quite find the two lads we brought on enough.”
