Leeds Sunday League: Crusaders defy odds to preserve treble bid

Premier Division leaders Chapeltown Fforde Grene and Championship Division favourites Kirkstall Crusaders met in the quarter-finals of the Hope Cup.

With both teams looking for a Sunday League treble something had to give and it was the Premier Division side that saw their treble dreams shattered as Kirkstall ran out narrow 4-3 winners.

Joel Hughes (2), Ash Thompson and Martin Loveridge netted the all-important goals for the winners.

The Chapeltown reply came from Dave Allanson (2) and Kane Blair.

Kirkstall will play the winners of West Leeds Armley and West Leeds Wortley in the semi-final.

In another quarter-final tie, it was again a Championship side that came out on top over Premier Division opponents.

Elsewhere, East Leeds Celtic ran out comfortable 5-0 home winners over Richmond Hill.

Joe Phillips (2), Dale Venables, Josh Fisher and Stephen Johnson scored to set up a semi-final tie against the winners of East End Park WMC and Harehills WMC.

In the Terry Pears Premier Division, East End Park WMC warmed up for their Hope Cup quarter-final next Sunday with a 6-4 home win over the bottom club, West Leeds Farnley.

They did not have things all their own way as the visitors led twice and were 4-3 up at one stage before the Premier side netted three times to claim the three points.

On target for the clubmen were Terry Tomlinson (2), Ben Olbison, Paul Sykes, Paul Baker and Karl Dickinson.

The Farnley goals came from Deacon James and Craig Mullaney, who both netted twice.

In the group stages of the President’s Cup, West Leeds Wortley secured a semi-final place with a comfortable 5-1 home win over Halfway House Bramley.

They shared the goals around with Geordie Rosendale, Josh Summers, Liam Cooper, Jordan Webb and Jordan O’Brian all all getting on the scoresheet for West Leeds.

The Halfway scorer was Luke Tibble.

Also taking in a group game were Woodcock, who took a point from a home draw against Bramley Villager with goals coming from Luke Henderson and Martin Roebuck. The Villager had Mo Ishaq and Colin McGroggin netting in reply.

In the only Championship game of the day, West Leeds Armley conceded home advantage to get their match against Western Juniors played.

And it paid off as they were 4-0 home winners with their goals coming from marksmen Ryan McQuade, Danny Hayhurst, Shane Collins and Dale McCormack.
