Leeds Combination League: Isle worthy of their rethink after formbook reversal

Belle Isle WMC defied their poor form and near extinction to beat in-form HT Sports 2-0 in the Jubilee Premier at Lawns Lane.

The County Sunday Cup champions, who initially announced that they would be withdrawing from all competitions in January, bounced back from three-straight defeats to win with goals from James Kitson and Reece Fennell.

In the process, Belle Isle went level on points with HT in third place in the top flight.

Bottom of the table Horsforth Fairweather were awarded their first three-point haul of the season with a home walkover against Halton Moor.

In the second tier, Colton pulled a rousing performance from nowhere to beat high-flying Queenswood Wanderers 3-1. In the game at Temple Newsam, Colton struck through Josh Ridgeway, who scored twice, and Mikey O’Brien.

Whitkirk Wanderers were again left to curse their inconsistency in a 6-3 reverse against JB Celtic, who are mounting a challenge to Wanderers’ third place with three consecutive victories.

Form-team Badri’s fifth straight victory came at a canter against bottom side Hare and Hounds at Sharp Lane, a game they won 2-0.

And Kyle Swithenbank continues to dig New Parnaby out of trouble, taking his tally to 13 for the season with a brace in their 3-1 defeat of AFC Bramley.

The second-bottom side also scored through Gary Driscoll, while Kyle Taylor replied for the hosts at Bramley Park.

Leaders Main Line Social were given an away walkover against South Leeds Independents.

In Division One, third-bottom Chapel Allerton pulled off a stunning upset, beating top-of-the-table Swillington Welfare 3-0 in their own back yard.

The game was locked at 0-0 until the hour mark, when Ronnie Hay opened the scoring. Goals on 78 and 85 minutes from Mark Freeman rubber-stamped a remarkable result.

Kippax Band Club picked up the slack at the top of the table, edging past KKS Zubry 2-1 with goals from Peter Gibbons and Aaron Gray.

Amaranth and FC Broadway are only separate by one point in mid-table but there was a yawning gulf in class between the two sides on Sunday as Amaranth won 6-0. Dave Turner hit four while Jahsiah Donaldson and Danny Blackburn also notched.

In the division’s other game, Oulton Athletic inflicted a fifth defeat on the bounce upon Original Oak, winning 2-1. New Pudsey were also given an away walkover against fourth-placed Garforth Sports & Social.

Division Two strugglers Royal Park Leeds were dumped out of the LUTY Cup at the hands of Division Three outfit Barwick Stallions who beat them 4-1.

Barwick struck through Gary Crossley, Kieron Dunn, James Nelson and Sam Nelson, while the home side’s consolation was scored by Brendan Mullen.

In Division Two, leaders Beechwood Sundays were held to a 1-1 draw with Waterintobeer. Andy Vernon gave Waterintobeer the lead, only for Beechwood to strike back with five minutes to go through Barry Edwards. Fourth-placed Bramley Town defeated third-placed hosts East Leeds AFC 4-0. Scott Barlow doubled up, while Marc Wilson and Shane Hanson added to the tally.

Millshaw Park Rangers held onto second with a 3-2 triumph over Commercial HQ. Adam Jarrett, Tom Snowden and Scott Carter scored for Millshaw while Chris Jones and Anthony Coates netted in the losing cause. Corpus Christi beat FC West Leeds (Guiseley) 4-2, inspired by a Liam Atwood brace and AFC Travellers drew 1-1 with Sporting Pudsey, with Jack Hill scoring for the hosts.

In Division Three, leaders FC Horsforth Saints thrashed Millshaw Park Rangers Reserves 5-1 with a Danny Tasker treble. Acorn (Bramley) edged past Yorkshire Black Rose 2-1 with goals from Charlie Upton and Chris Simpson while Dale Hague had all of Halfway’s three goals in their 3-2 defeat of FC West Leeds (Guiseley) Reserves. Hosts Northern Star and AFC Elford drew 3-3 with Kieron Dieghan, Atal Habibi and Neil Hodgson scoring for the hosts. Wortley Knights also beat Temple 4-3.
