Junior Football: Tactical switch turns tide in Horsforth's favour

Glen took the lead in the first half before Ollie Mangan stroked home an equaliser from outside the box after some great work down the right hand side between Guy Davenport, Charlie Webb and Charlie Heath.

Despite dominating the rest of the first half, Horsforth went behind to a penalty and exited the first half behind.

Glen were then on top for the first 10 minutes of the second half before a tactical change saw centre-half Jack Twyford and centre-forward James Tonge swap positions and the resultant reward saw Twyford notch the equaliser.

With Glen defending resolutely, it took a calculated header from Lucas Sefton to break the deadlock and give Horsforth all three points.

In the Huddersfield League, Brighouse Juniors Terriers were narrowly denied 2-1 in a Division Three derby at leaders Shelf Under-12s.

Shelf broke the deadlock on 10 minutes as a cross flew through Brighouse defender Ethan Wroot’s legs and ended up nestling in the back of the net. From the re-start, Brighouse looked the more likely to score as Jake Hargreaves and Jack Green combined well in midfield while Ashlee Beck and Joe Whitworth were both lively down the flanks.

Player of the match Samuel Brearley came close to equalising as he saw his freekick from 20 yards miss the target by inches. Wroot and Cash Walker had good chances saved expertly by the visitors’ keeper, sending the home team into the break 1-0 down.

Shelf re-grouped and started the second half the stronger and quickly added to their score with a well-worked move.

But Daniel Rowley and Liam Lyne gave their all for the Brighouse cause and the visitors pulled a goal back when a Shelf defender turned a cross into his own net to make it 2-1.

The remainder of the game opened up with Brighouse keeper Bradley Atkinson making some athletic saves while at the other end of the pitch Jacob Sugden and Green both had long-range shots saved.

In a game played the previous weekend, Leeds City Boys Under-14s enjoyed a 4-2 victory from their league game at Middlesbrough.

Cold and blustery conditions greeted the teams but Leeds started off much the better and had two chances to score before Owen Hindley broke the deadlock with an excellent strike from well outside the box into the top corner. The Whites were dominating play and scored a second with a deflected effort from Lewis Branton before Alistair Thompson made it three with another long-range effort that lashed across the goalkeeper.

The whole team were performing well with the midfield on top and the defence rarely troubled.

Leeds then scored a fourth early in the second half with Branton heading in at the far post from a corner.

Boro must have decided to go for broke and came more into the game as Leeds relaxed and scored a nice goal from their striker.

The game then descended into a midfield scrap with neither side really creating chances until almost the last kick when Boro got a second.

Leeds still have a possibility of finishing second in the league and a semi-final in the Greater Manchester Cup still to come.
