'It's real quality and it should be as Billy was great quality,' Leeds United legends pay tribute to Bremner Square

The square was opened to fans for the first time on Thursday morning after a summer of refurbishment around the famous Billy Bremner statue at Elland Road.

Whites supporters were given the chance to purchase a tile and write a personalised message which will be ingrained into the square at the ground forever.

Phase one was completed with 6,000 stones installed alongside the Bremner XI, which features United legends such as Gary Speed and Lucas Radebe, among some of those from the Don Revie era in West Yorkshire.

Club ambassadors Eddie Gray, Norman Hunter and Peter Lorimer were all in attendance to cut the ribbon and officially open what they described as a fitting tribute to Billy Bremner and the Leeds United fans.

"I think it looks tremendous," said Gray.

"The number of fans that have stones in here, and I'm fortunate to be in there myself, it's a great honour. To have one in there next to someone like Billy [Bremner] is fantastic.

"It's real quality and it should be because he was great quality. His enthusiasm for the game was tremendous, his ability, his desire and will to win, even in training games - they got a bit tasty at times when Billy was about... we used to play Scotland v England but Don [Revie] had to stop them, it was getting a bit feisty!

Norman Hunter also believed that Whites fans will be happy with the outcome of the square: "I think the fans will be very impressed with this.

"It'll be a meeting point, there's nothing like this even in the Premier League. All the great players at the club will all be down here somewhere so it's good for the fans to remember and be part of it."

Lorimer joined Gray in praising his former United team-mate Bremner: "Billy was our leader, our captain and he was very inspirational. It's great, it's a few years since Billy was here but no-one forgets Billy Bremner or that team - it was a fabulous side and it put the club on the map."

United fans have until July 31 to purchase a tile to be included in phase two of the project following its grand opening.
