Inter-League Cup: Flynn puts rivalries on back burner for a common goal

Carlton might be newly-promoted, but the Division One champions will be just one point behind Premier Division leaders Beeston St Anthony’s should they win their game in hand.

But it is unison with rivals Beeston, Field and Leeds City and co that Flynn is also dreaming of landing the FA National Inter League Cup.

The West Yorkshire League Representative Team were one of 50 teams nationwide to enter the competition and are now down to the last four ahead of Saturday’s semi-final.

The Wearside League, Yorkshire Amateur League, West Cheshire League and, most recently, the Cambridgeshire County League have already been despatched with a trip to the Spartan South Midlands League now in the offing this weekend.

Consequently, there will be no top-flight games in the West Yorkshire League this weekend as the league’s top players focus on different matters in a feeling reminiscent of an international break.

And international duty really will await the winners of this year’s FA Inter League Cup who will go on to represent England in the European version of the competition next season.

Flynn is manager of the WYL side, assisted by Beeston’s Mally Hill and Hunslet’s Nicky Johnson, with the boss in no doubt as to the magnitude of this Saturday’s semi-final.

“This is, without doubt, the most prestigious game the West Yorkshire League’s history,” said Flynn. “The winners of this competition goes on to represent England in Europe next season, which would be a fantastic achievement and a great experience for the players involved. We are confident we can do the league proud.”
