Huddersfield Town impose ban on fan seen waving Turkish flag at Leeds United supporters

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN have banned "indefinitely" a 59-year-old man seen taunting Leeds United fans with a Turkish flag during Sunday's West Yorkshire derby.

Leeds United fans were outraged as the flag was unfurled in the Revell Ward Stand, thought to be a reference to the two United fans stabbed to death before a match in Istanbul in 2000.

Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were stabbed during street clashes the night before Leeds played Turkey’s Galatasaray in the second leg of the Uefa Cup semi-finals.

Police confirmed on Sunday that a man was ejected from the John Smith’s Stadium and Huddersfield have placed an 'indefinite' ban on the 59-year-old.

The Championship club also criticised the "shameful behaviour".

A club statement read: "Huddersfield Town can confirm that a 59 year-old man was ejected from the John Smith’s Stadium Revell Ward Stand at Sunday’s game against Leeds United.

YEP Says: Huddersfield v Leeds United touchline argy-bargy is perhaps understandable, but mocking the dead is unforgivable"The individual has subsequently been banned from the John Smith’s Stadium indefinitely.

"Huddersfield Town takes incidents of this nature very seriously and will not tolerate this shameful behaviour under any circumstances. This individual is not representative of the club or its supporters."
