How did Ronaldo Vieira fare on his return to the Leeds United starting XI?

It was the 19-year-old's first start in a White shirt since the 2-2 draw at Derby in February and his first involvement altogether since the 3-0 drubbing at Middlesbrough.

Vieira has found his second season a tough slog at Elland Road having been used sporadically under former boss Thomas Christiansen and even less so since Paul Heckingbottom walked through the doors at Thorp Arch.

His first two years in professional football, you might say, have been polar opposites, but on Friday afternoon the Whites faithful may have seen a glimpse of Vieira beginning to get back to his best.

It was his England under-20's involvement last summer that many put down to his dogged start to the campaign as he scored the winning penalty kick for the young Lions who retained their Toulon Tournament crown.

If England did in fact cause his burnout then they may have just returned the favour after a surprise call-up to the national squad earlier this week.

Following Tuesday's friendly against Portugal in Manchester, in which Vieira saw out the closing stages, Heckingbottom thrust the youngster back into the limelight with Adam Forshaw missing through injury.

Vieira's first involvement came not long after United had opened the scoring through Caleb Ekuban as Jon Flanagan found space in the area, just as he looked to shoot the midfielder made a brilliant tackle to deny the Liverpool loanee.

In his 1318 previous Championship minutes this season we had seen a shadow of his first season self but after 25 minutes Vieira was the one driving Leeds on from midfield.

It continued throughout the afternoon.

A fabulous ball across to Ezgjan Alioski after the break led to the second of the game as the Macedonian thundered an effort towards Alnwick's goal with the goalkeeper only able to parry the ball into Pablo Hernandez' path who made no mistake from close range.

Vieira had the swagger back that has been so sorely missed.

As the game reached its climax with Wanderers searching for that elusive equaliser Vieira was everywhere, he was demanding the ball at his feet, throwing himself into tackles and headers and bullying the opposing midfield.

Make no mistake this was not the perfect performance, misplaced passes were there for all to see and the odd wrong decision came in those critical moments.

As the song goes he is a teenager until July and boy is it easy to forget that given the stature of the young man.

Vieira is by no means the finished article but Friday's showing was certainly a step in the right direction to finding the form that made him one of the first names on the team sheet during Garry Monk's tenure in West Yorkshire.

As United grabbed only their second win of the calendar year the youngster played a key role in what was a very Good Friday at Elland Road.
