Heavy Woollen League: Stopper Bagshaw's penalty goals are not enough to save Oakwell Motel

Mirfield Town moved to the top of the Heavy Woollen Sunday League Premier Division following a 4-3 win over Oakwell Motel.

Kieran Corley hit a brace for Town, who also had Reece Drake and Gibril Bojang on the score sheet. Oakwell’s scorers were keeper Troy Bagshaw, who netted two penalties, and Ashley Fallas.

Joining Mirfield on 19 points are Woodkirk Valley who edged out bottom side Overthorpe Sports Club 4-3 in a tight game. Matthew Moon, Mark McDermott and Will Clapham netted for Woodkirk, with Kristian Angus, James Wilson and Lee Davey scoring for Overthorpe to level the tie at 3-3 before Moon drilled home his second in the dying minutes to send the points to Woodkirk.

St John Fisher are a point behind the leaders but weren’t in action, though they have games in hand over the top two.

Andrew Pickles (two), Lee Brook and Dominic Karimi scored as Woodman Batley Carr climbed to fifth place after winning 4-3 at Millbridge WMC, who replied through a Luke Sherman double plus a strike from Neil Griffiths.

In the Championship St John Fisher Reserves blew the chance to go second after they were beaten 3-2 at home to an improving Hartshead side. Rob Johnson (two) and Alex Barnes hit Hartshead’s goals, with Rob Bordman and Dominic Simpson replying for Fisher, who remain third. Liam Roe hit a double for third bottom Marsh but they lost 7-2 at home sixth placed Deighton WMC. Birstall St Patricks won for the second week on the trot after Alex Howdle, Tom Williams, Craig Metcalfe and Joe Parry all scored in a. 4-0 win at Town Rangers.

Hanging Heaton Cricket Club extended their lead in Division One to eleven points after a hat-trick from Scott Lightowler, a brace from Tom Ramsden, plus goals from Dave Hall and Mark Chamberlain saw them win 7-0 at fifth placed Clifton Rangers Reserves. Joe Green and Ashley Harper found the net as Battyeford maintained third spot with a 2-0win at home to FC Liversedge.

The Division Two honours lie in the balance as the top two sides both won again, with leaders Old Bank WMC maintaining a six point lead at the top with a 3-1 win at Clifton Rangers A thanks to strikes from Robert Evans, Josh Cooke and Stephen Brown.

Batley Irish Nash are second, but significantly with two games in hand, after Sean Housecroft, Kyle Walker and Jason Campbell all struck in a 3-2 win against Rose of York.

Saville Arms climbed to third place after Saul Lee hit the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Snowdon.
