Heavy Woollen League: Old Bank overcome stiff test to book place in final

Old Bank WMC booked their place in the Heavy Woollen Challenge Trophy final after beating Birkenshaw Reserves 3-2 in a feisty game at Overthorpe Sports Club on Sunday.

Robert Evans led the way with a brace for Old Bank, with Josh Cooke hitting the other.

Birkenshaw replied through Stuart Kiltie and Ryan Templeton.

The second semi-final between Rose of York and Batley Irish Nash takes place at Overthorpe Sports Club on April 3, kick-off 11am.

With leaders Woodkirk Valley in cup action, Mirfield Town blew the chance to go top, going down 3-0 to Woodman Batley Carr, who scored through Dominic Karimi, Lee Brook and Greg Snowdon.

St John Fisher lie a point behind the leaders, but with two games in hand after Mathew Bug hit four goals in an 8-2 demolition of Oakwell Motel.

Rob Bordman and Rob Hiscox both hit doubles for Fisher, with Jonny Beverley and Jack Anderson replying for Oakwell.

Millbridge WMC held on to beat bottom side Overthorpe Sports Club 2-1 after goals from Luke Sherman and Callum Padgett put them two up, only for Steve Jordan to reduce the arrears which led to a frantic finish.

In the only game played in the Championship, Heckmondwike Sports Club missed out on taking over at the top after drawing 1-1 with lowly Birstall St Patricks. Dale Hanson netted for Heckmondwoke, but Joseph Parry’s strike earned Birstall a precious point.

Hanging Heaton Cricket Club remain eight points clear at the top of Division One despite being held to a 2-2 draw at bottom side Punch Bowl.

Thomas Ramsden hit both goals for the leaders, but Punch Bowl earned a point through goals from Josh Wood and Jordan Bales.

The Yorkshireman remain in second place after they too were held to a 2-2 draw, this time at FC Liversedge.

Bradley Rufus and Joel Franklin netted for The Yorkshireman with Jack Brooke and Kyle Smith ensured a point went to Liversedge. Clifton Rangers Reserves lie fourth after winning 5-1 at lowly St Ignatius (Chris Rushforth). Batley Celtics climbed out of the drop zone after a Brad Jackson hat-trick helped them to a 4-2 win at Scholes Athletic. Ash Parkinson hit the other, with Scholes replying through Mick O’Hara and Gareth Jones.

Batley Irish Nash moved to within 10 points of leaders Old Bank after drawing 2-2 against Six Lane Ends. Tom Yarnold and David O’Keefe struck for Nash, with Adam Williams and Logan Hall replying for the visitors.

Dean Vernon, Ashley Wells and Mathew Bolton all scored for fourth place Rose of York in a 3-2 win at Clifton Rangers A.

Snowdon climbed to sixth place with a 2-0 win at lowly Field Head.
