County Cup: Penalties prove to be Beeston's downfall

Beeston’s Stephen Crawford netted a brace upon the long trip to Lancashire but the hosts took the game to spot kicks and held their nerve to progress to round three.

Holders Rawdon Old Boys also went out after a 5-4 loss on penalties at home to Grassington United after a 1-1 draw, Harry Fryer the normal time scorer for Rawdon.

West Yorkshire League leaders Leeds City eased through with a 4-1 success at Kirk Deighton Rangers while Ilkley Town overcame visiting Hunslet Club 5-2 with a Matt Whitehead brace plus goals from Tom Smith, Harry Brown and Tony Harris. A Lee Turner double consoled Hunslet.

Whitkirk Wanderers enjoyed a fine 3-0 win at home to Rimington as Jason Kitchen, Oliver Maude and Jovanni Sterling all netted while Horbury Town edged out visiting Sherburn White Rose 4-3 thanks to a Lewis Stephens brace plus strikes from Luke Playford and Gibril Bojang. Daniel Middleton struck twice for Sherburn whose Daniel Collins also netted.

Robin Hood Athletic were beaten 4-0 at Huddersfield Amateur but Field romped in 8-2 win at Leeds Modernians as Kieran Suddards hit a hat-trick.

Knaresborough Town obliged 3-0 at Sowerby United with a Ben Dickens double and Steve Walker strike but Salts were spilled 3-2 at home to Huddersfield YMCA.

Yorkshire Amateur League side Leeds Medics & Dentists claimed the scalp of West Yorkshire Premier Division side Headingley by progressing 4-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Headingley led 2-0 at the break but goals from Headingley who were 2-0 up at the break Colm Hicks and Francisco Matos brought Medics level.

Fellow YAL side Stanley United eased to a 4-1 success at Thorn Tree United through a hat-trick for Josh Whiteley and well-taken header from Joe Childs.

But Yorkshire Amateur League leaders Farsley Celtic Juniors were dumped out after a 4-3 loss at Wibsey who are bottom of the Yorkshire Amateur League Premier.

Wibsey’s assistant manager and goalkeeper Mark House proved the hero in the shoot-out with Farsley having led in normal time through Danny Lyons before Danny O’Donnell equalised.

Gildersome Spurs Old Boys lost out 2-1 at Pool who netted twice in the final ten minutes after Jamie Lloyd’s opener. Athletico were beaten 4-0 at Settle United while Horsforth St Margaret’s were defeated 4-2 at Church Fenton.

Alwoodley were beaten 5-4 on penalties at home to Boroughbridge who equalised in the 92nd minute through Philip Milsom after Dino Mulavdic’s spot kick had Alwoodley in front.

YAL high flyers Drighlington lost 2-0 at home to Otley Town while Stanningley Old Boys exited by the same score at home to Oxenhope Recreation.

Elsewhere, Featherstone Colliery went through with a 4-2 win at home to Shelf Juniors while Hartshead took the scalp of County Amateur League high-flying hosts Littletown with a 1-0 triumph as Liam Roache bagged the winner. Aberford Albion were outscored 6-4 at County Amateur League leaders Golcar United.

The visitors led 3-2 at the break as Liam Thompson struck a hat-trick, with John Mallinson also registering for Aberford.

But Golcar’s Buddy Cox fired in four goals, whilst Alex Hallam and Ryan John were also on target to help seal the victory. West Yorkshire League Division Two side Swillington Saints marched on with a 3-2 triumph at home to Thorne Colliery thanks to a Daniel Waite brace and Matthew Marshall strike.

From the Harrogate League, Ventus Yeadon Celtic were chinned 2-1 at Springhead despite Aiden Panwar netting.

In an all-West Riding County Amateur Football League tie, Route One Rovers got the better of Steeton Reserves in a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw. Rovers’ Shoaib Iqbal and Steeton’s Will Knight both scored to send the game to penalties, with Route One Rovers prevailing 4-2.

Toller lost a high scoring tie 9-5 as they crashed out at the hands of Hebden Royd Red Star. Lewis Cockfroft struck four times, Daniel Pugh hit a hat-trick and William Chadwick scored a brace to help the hosts progress.

Braces from Kamran Khan and Tawheed Ahmed and a goal from Zakariva Dava were not enough for Toller.

Bradford Olympic also succumbed to defeat as they were beaten 4-2 by Britannia Sports. Sports pulled away in the secondhalf as goals from Ryan Metcalfe and Kieron Batey were not enough for Bradford

SATURDAY ROUND-UP

HORBURY TOWN were the only West Yorkshire Premier Division side in action at the weekend and they took full advantage, defeating Sherburn White Rose 4-3, writes JAMIE WOODHOUSE.

The win sees Horbury move to sixth, just six points off that elusive top-three target.

In Division One, Hall Green United extended their lead to four points with a 3-1 victory at Kippax.

All the damage was done in the first half, with Tom Fowler netting a brace and Zaid Amaan also on target.

At the other end of the table Howden Clough claimed a vital three points against fellow relegation battlers Wetherby Athletic in a 6-4 win. Newsome also returned to winning ways, ending their losing streak at two games with their 1-0 victory against Rothwell.

Campion Reserves are the new Division Two leaders after their 2-1 win at home to Altofts, Dillon Hollinger and Chris Hellewell claiming the all-important goals.

Shelley Reserves are only three points behind Campion after their 6-2 demolition of Hunsworth.

Oliver Scott and Jamie Jagger both claimed braces for Campion with Jacob Robertson and Samuel Lampuk-Afianua also making the scoresheet.

Ripon City made it back-to-back league wins after seeing off OId Centralians in a 4-3 win.

There was one game in the West Riding County Amateur Football League, as Lepton Highlanders won just their second game of the season, defeating PFC 4-2. Jordan Pettifor struck a brace as Andrew Mellad and Nathan Sloane also got on the scoresheet for the hosts.

Mahammedou Kamara and Sharaz Mahmood registered for PFC.

In the Wakefield League, Crofton Sports maintained their 100 per cent record in the Wakefield Saturday Premier Division.

A comfortable 4-1 home win for Crofton against bottom-side Beechwood Santos, saw them move three points clear of second-placed Crackenedge.

Meanwhile, a brace from Luke Tantram helped Durkar beat eighth placed Royston Cross 3-0.

In the Jim Callaghan Cup, second bottom Ryhill travelled to Division Two outfit Dewsbury Westside.

There was no cup upset here as Ryhill were 3-1 victors.

In Division One, Nostell Miners Welfare hit home nine goals against FC Thornes who could only notch two themselves.

Waterloo managed to find their first win in five games when they beat AFC Sheaf 5-2 away from home.

Ossett Dynamos also overcame West End Terriers 4-2. Samuel Hirst and Joshua Williams were on the score sheet for Ossett.

In Division Two, Pontefract Town proved their dominance at the top of the table when they beat New Carlton 7-1 away from home.

Elsewhere, Howden Clough remained three points behind the league leaders when they beat Thornhill United 5-2, four goals coming from Warren Carr.

And five goals from Gareth Derbyshire helped Snydale Athletic Reserves beat Crofton Sports Reserves 6-0.
