Taylor is due to join Burnley for their first day of pre-season training with the Clarets now committed to signing him from Leeds. The 23-year-old is out of contract at Elland Road and has agreed personal terms with Burnley.

But Leeds are entitled to a fee on account of his age and have yet to strike a deal with the Premier League club.

Sources close to negotiations told the Yorkshire Evening Post last week that Taylor’s valuation was likely to be set by tribunal, but Burnley are understood to have approached United for further talks about a fee over the weekend.

Leeds value Taylor in excess of £5m and their refusal to accept offers from West Bromwich Albion saw the West Midlands club pull out of a deal to sign Taylor during the last month.

Burnley are ready to risk the unpredictability of a tribunal ruling if discussions with Leeds fail to force an agreement, but the fresh talks have re-opened the door to a private deal.

Taylor, who submitted a transfer request last summer and refused to play in United’s final game of the 2017-18 season, was absent from Thorp Arch as Leeds’ squad began training last week.
