The 22-year-old former Team Sky rider won stage three after a daring attack that he managed to turn into victory.

Edmondson had tried a similar attack on stage three of the Tour de Yorkshire last week but was reeled in.

However, on the 177.2km stage in Gabala, Edmondson landed his first professional win.

It comes after a trying second season with Sky, which ended with him not re-signing with the British squad and having to fight to earn a contract elsewhere.

He was eventually picked up by Irish team An Post Chain Reaction and he has begun repaying their faith with yesterday’s victory.

He tweeted: Wasn’t expecting that to work! Normally my daft attacks don’t work out.. Bloody glad it did though! Thanks for all the tweets.”

The result lifts Edmondson from 11th to fifth in the general classification, 3min 49sec adrift of leader Primoz Roglic of Slovenia.
