Beaumont targeting historic world title triumph

NORTHALLERTON-born cycling ace Scott Beaumont has set his sights on making history by becoming the first male rider to win BMX and mountain bike world championship titles.

Beaumont, 38, finished fifth at last year’s World Four-Cross Championships which is akin to mountain biking on a BMX style track.

The Yorkshireman has been British champion in the event eight times in total including for the past six years.

Now based in Kidderminster, Beaumont is also a two-time BMX world champion and ten-time national champion in that discipline.

But a world fourcross title remains the final desired sporting aim for Beaumont who hopes to finally achieve his goal in 2018.

Beaumont told the YEP: “The aims for 2018 are really quite simple - to win the Four-Cross World Championships in Italy in July and become the first male rider to win BMX and mountain bike world championship titles.

“Winning the world championship is the ultimate aim and it is very achievable.”

Beaumont was born in Yorkshire but moved to the Midlands when he was young.

The Yorkshireman began racing when he was just four years old at a race track in Redditch.

“I finished second and was so happy with the plastic trophy I received,” Beaumont recalled.

“From that moment I was hooked and haven’t looked back since.

“I am very happy with my career so far.

“The achievements and titles I have and the opportunities I have had to race my bicycle around the world. The perception and popularity of my sport is at an all-time high with huge crowds watching every event and more TV than ever before the sport is doing very well.

“I’d argue it’s the most action packed cycling sport in the world - it was actually designed by Eurosport to keep TV viewers on the edge of their seat.

“For me, there is no sport like it.”

There is, though, also very little spare time for Beaumont when away from the race track with the biking ace juggling sporting success and young fatherhood as he approaches his 40th birthday.

“I am a pro cyclist so this is my day job,” Beaumont reasoned.

“I also have a 20 month old daughter which takes up my remaining time!

“Believe it or not, despite being nearly 40 years old, my drive to win is stronger than ever.

“My training is very focused and I have the best team behind me with USN. We work very hard and it makes me very happy when we can beat the young riders.”
