Yorkshire CCC prepare to make relationship with England’s Dom Bess permanent

DOMINIC BESS, the England off-spin bowler, is poised to join Yorkshire on a four-year deal.

The Yorkshire Post understands that Bess will put pen to paper on a contract next week after Somerset announced the player’s departure.

Bess, 23, impressed during two loan spells at Headingley last year, and he wants the regular cricket that Yorkshire can provide. The Exeter-born player, pictured right, is not an automatic choice at Taunton, where he will stay until the end of the season and where he is in direct competition with left-arm spinner and England team-mate Jack Leach.

Yorkshire have made no secret of their desire to make their relationship with Bess a permanent one, especially as Adil Rashid, their first-choice spinner, no longer plays County Championship cricket.

Bess not only brings wickets and control but he also balances the batting at No 8; he has a first-class hundred to his name and six half-centuries.

How much Yorkshire will see of Bess remains to be seen; he has played eight Tests this year and could be in line for a central contract.

Although Yorkshire have long wanted to strengthen their spin department, they have high hopes of 23-year-old off-spinner Jack Shutt, among others, who will no doubt benefit from Bess’s experience and example.

Bess played 10 games in all cricket for Yorkshire last season, scoring 164 runs and taking 11 wickets.
