Yorkshire aim to get Head start against leaders
TRAVIS HEAD is set to make his Yorkshire debut in tonight's NatWest T20 Blast match against Notts at Trent Bridge.
The Australian batsman is poised for his first outing as Yorkshire seek their fourth successive win in the 20-over format.
Head, a 22-year-old left-hander, arrived in England earlier this week and netted with his new Yorkshire team-mates during this week’s County Championship game against Surrey at The Oval.
Tonight’s match (6.30pm start) will also mark Kane Williamson’s final appearance before he links up with New Zealand for their Test tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Williamson, the 25-year-old Kiwis captain, sat out the match at The Oval due to what Yorkshire described as “mental fatigue”.
Williamson had been playing pretty much non-stop for several months and had featured for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League prior to arriving at Yorkshire last month.
Before that, Williamson was on duty in the World T20 and fatigue had seemingly affected his game.
Although he made 65 in the win over Derbyshire last Sunday, his highest T20 score for Yorkshire, it was Williamson’s first half-century in 16 innings.
He was re-signed by Yorkshire on a short-term contract, having previously played for them in 2013 and 2014.
Tonight’s game is another important one as Yorkshire seek to continue their march towards the last eight.
Yorkshire have breathed new life into their campaign by winning their last three matches against Lancashire at Headingley by five runs, against Birmingham Bears at Headingley by two runs, and against Derbyshire at Derby by one run.
It has been a stirring revival by a side that had managed only one win in their opening seven games, and who looked likely to make no impact in this year’s tournament.
Yorkshire have risen to sixth place, level on points with fourth-placed Durham, who occupy the last quarter-final spot, but they face a stiff task against a Notts team who lead the North Group after five wins from 11 games and only two defeats.
