Wetherby League: Deighton on title trail after rallying from horror start

Second-placed Kirk Deighton put a horror start behind them in keeping thoughts of a first Division One title on track.

Deighton lost their first three wickets with just two runs on the board against Shadwell but recovered to complete a 56-run win in a very low-scoring affair.

Opener Rohan Sivajoti (35) ended up scoring the same as the entire Shadwell team as the ball dominated the bat.

Ben Turner (5-12) and Tom Meyrick (4-37) caused the problems to Deighton in bowling the title hopefuls out for just 91. But captain Rich Ward’s 4-10 destroyed Shadwell’s batting card, ending 35 all out with last man Oli Scholey not batting.

Deighton remain a single point behind surprise package Scarcroft, who beat Old Leodiensians by nine runs.

Having made 184-9 batting first, the leaders bowled the home team out on 175.

St Chad’s piled up 316-8 to keep Church Fenton rooted to the bottom. Matthew Stevens (67) and Alasdair Fearns (60) got Chad’s off to a flyer before Atiq Khan took five wickets in bowling Fenton out for 170.

Connor Williams made a defiant 70 from the top of the order.

Aussie Luke Schumann contributed with bat and ball as Bilton-in-Ainsty blew fellow high-fliers Barwick-in-Elmet away by eight wickets.Schumann took four wickets and scored an unbeaten 49 as Barwick’s total of 93 was chased down with ease. Relegation candidates Hillam and Monk Fryston and Sicklinghall played out a high-scoring thriller, which the latter won by one wicket away from home. ’Hall bowled Hillam out for 225 and chased it down with the last pair at the crease.

Garforth Parish Church moved above opponents South Milford following a 141-run win. James Baldwin fell one short of a century and Michael Fisher (66) also made his mark as Garforth scored 232. Dan White took five wickets for Milford, who were bowled out for just 91. Angus Campbell came close to a first century for Division Two leaders Rufforth as his unbeaten side took the Derby spoils over Long Marston.

Campbell scored 97 and took two wickets as Rufforth defended 205-5 by 105 runs.

Ledsham (221-7) moved into second spot after thrashing Kirk Hammerton (113ao) by 108 runs.

Matt Williams’ century provided the basis for Headingley Bramhope’s 95-run victory at fierce rivals St Chad’s A. Williams scored 109 out of Headingley’s 262-8 as Chad’s dropped down to fourth place after they were dismissed for 167.

Ian Cunningham was the hero for Saxton as he singlehandedly beat Thorner. Out of his side’s total of 129, the spin bowler scored 86 not out and then took 3-8 to bowl the hosts out for just 113.

Meanwood picked up a first win since joining the second tier thanks to Adam Copeland’s 53 in chasing down a target of 146 at Scholes.

The points were shared in a nail-biting clash between Garforth Parish A and Sherburn Eversley as both teams finished all out on 76. The result was the first time Garforth’s second string had avoided defeat this summer.
