YEADON are praying they have cottoned on to something good after a shrewd change to their batting line-up yielded fruit on Bank Holiday Monday.

The north Leeds outfit’s first win back in the top-flight of the Bradford League had been a long time in coming, with proof that things come to those who patiently wait arriving in Monday’s much-needed 40-run victory over New Farnley.

Tipped to struggle following their late entry into Division One, Yeadon retained confidence that all was not lost, but were also mindful that tangible proof was also required – by way of a win bonus.

The success was built on the promotion up the order of wicket-keeper/batsman Jake Wray, who combined to successful effect with James Todd against Farnley.

The pair put on 61 for the opening wicket against Farnley, with Wray leading the way en route to a blistering 74 and Yeadon are hoping it’s the sign of things to come.

Cricket chairman Duncan Sloane said: “It’s the first win under our belts and a decent win as well.

“Twenty points don’t come around very often and we are over the moon about it.

“We felt we weren’t that far away before. But we moved Jake (Wray) up the order, with Damian (Gormley) missing and it paid off.

“It was a good move and it got us off to a great start.

“Getting a good start was something we had been missing. It eases the pressure down the batting order and we all chipped in.

“What we cannot do now is be complacent about it. We are third-from-bottom and want to consolidate and move up the table now.

“It was always going to be a fight this year and we will fight all the way. We won’t give up.”

Next up are champions Cleckheaton at home tomorrow, but having been buoyed by Monday’s win, Yeadon head into it in good heart.

Sloane added: “It’s the champions at the weekend and we’ve got to see if we can get as many points as we can and do the same again.

“Getting out of the losing habit is a hard thing to do and we’ve done it now and need to build on that.”

Elsewhere, leaders Woodlands – four points clear of Cleck’ – travel to Bradford and Bingley. Third hosts fifth, with Farsley seeking to get back on track after defeat at Albert Terrace at home to Hanging Heaton.

Pudsey St Lawrence, in fourth, welcome New Farnley, while Pudsey Congs, propping up the rest after no wins in seven league matches, visit Lightcliffe.

Morley will be seeking to continue their solid start to the season at East Bierley, while a Division Two derby sees Hartshead Moor at home to Spen Victoria.

Champions Beckwithshaw host the side who denied them an Aire-Wharfe League double last season in Waddilove Cup holders Burley tomorrow, with both sides having made ignominious starts to the league campaign.

Leaders Otley visit Ben Rhydding, with second-paced Kirkstall Eddies welcoming Guiseley. Rock-bottom Collingham go to Ilkley, Rawdon and Pool host Bilton and Steeton.

Townville face the first leg of their weekend double-header with Wakefield Thornes in the top-flight of the Central Yorkshire League tomorrow.

The top two are on the road with Scholes and Altofts heading to Birstall and Methley respectively.

It’s tight at the top of Division One of the Wetherby League, with Wetherby, Kirk Deighton, Bilton in Ainsty and Great Preston separated by two points, with Barwick in Elmet, St Chads, Old Modernians and Shadwell not too far behind either.

Key fixtures tomorrow see Bilton in Ainsty and Kirk Deighton welcome Great Preston and Old Mods respectively.

In the Pontefract League, defending champions Old Sharlston visit in-form Streethouse, while a battle of two strugglers sees Nostell host Stainborough. Leaders Ackworth host Frickley.

A mouth-watering ECB Yorkshire League clash at St George’s Road tomorrow sees Harrogate play host to York. Castleford entertain Scarborough.
