Headingley Test day three: Broad takes England level with New Zealand

Broad made 46 from 39 balls with five fours and a six as England made 350 in reply to New Zealand’s 350.

It was the eighth time in Test cricket that the first innings totals have finished level, and the second time in England after the hosts and India each scored 390 at Edgbaston in 1986.

Broad’s innings was key as England added 83 for their last two wickets from 89 balls after they had slipped to 267-8 from their overnight 253-5.

New Zealand had 15 minutes to negotiate before lunch, which was taken at 1.15pm after the start was delayed by 15 minutes due to rain.

They reached 7-0 from four overs, with Martin Guptill on four and Tom Latham on three.

After resuming under overcast skies, England lost their sixth wicket to the eighth delivery of the day when Ian Bell was caught at second slip by Mark Craig off Tim Southee having failed to add to his overnight 12.

Southee later captured two wickets in four balls when he had Jos Buttler caught at first slip by Craig for 10 and Moeen Ali held at third slip by Guptill for a single.

But Broad and Mark Wood added 51 for the ninth wicket from 49 balls, riding their luck at times but also playing some fluent strokes as the New Zealand bowlers lost their way.

Wood made 19 before edging Craig to wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi, with Broad and James Anderson adding 32 for the last wicket before Broad was bowled by Matt Henry.

Southee finished with 4-83 from 30 overs, while Craig and Trent Boult each took two wickets.
