Wortley pair pack a punch in Ireland

Have your say

Two Leeds girls have brought gold and silver boxing medals back to a gym in Wortley.

Ellie-Ann Joyce, 14, and Abi Craven, 13, both from Leeds, travelled to Ireland with the Yorkshire Association squad and their regional coach, Jason Gledhill, to compete in the Esker BoxCup, an all-female boxing contest held in the Emerald Isle and now in its fourth year.

Over 280 female boxers across all age and weight ranges from around Europe competed.

And with over a thousand spectators and participants present, it proved to be a successful weekend for Yorkshire.

Both Ellie-Ann and Abi returned victorious.

Abi, weighing in at 42 kilos came home with gold, while Elli-Ann collected silver in her 44 kilos weight category.

Their coach, Leeds-born former professional and amateur boxer Danny Thornton, who runs the Camp Detox Gym in Wortley where the girls train, said: “The juniors are my passion and we have the newest crew coming through.

“It was a fantastic achievement from the two young girls.”
